Focus on Southern Africa
Focus on the Family Africa was founded in 1992 and is located outside of Durban, South Africa. It was established to minister to the needs of families throughout the region. The office desires to be sensitive to the needs of families in Southern Africa and meet those needs with strong, biblically based advice and resources. That advice is distributed through constituent services, resources, radio broadcasts and educational programs. Newsletters, magazines and other resources are sent to people on their mailing list while staff respond to telephone calls and letters that include counseling and referral services to families in need. In this way they are able to connect with over 20 000 people every month. Constituent services has a wide range of resources it can offer constituents through Focus on the Family Southern Africa's resource department. The resources, which address issues like marriage, parenting and relationships, are also available through the Web site and the Focus Book Room. The Focus Book Room provides constituents in the area with all the facilities of a Christian bookstore and supplies a wide range of Focus on the Family books, tapes, magazines, videos and CDs. Focus on the Family programs are broadcast on over 60 radio stations in Africa. Local station programs offered include Focus on the Family with Dr. James Dobson, Adventures in Odyssey, James Dobson Family Minute and Focus on the Family Radio Theatre. But because the Focus on the Family Southern Africa office is equipped with a fully operational recording studio, it has expanded some of its programming to include interviews of local personalities such as sports and government figures. Their outreach programs offer a variety of biblically based solutions to world problems including HIV & AIDS and Drugs, as well as guidance for married couples and parents. The most notable of these is No Apologies, which is an abstinence only sex-education program that has been adapted to reach Southern African youths. Focus on the Family Southern Africa is attempting to extend the reach of No Apologies by implementing it into life skills courses in schools. Currently the office is in discussions with governments throughout the region to make that possible. At the same time, the program is being introduced into churches, youth groups and independent schools. More than 2,000 teachers and parents have already been trained. Although Focus on the Family Southern Africa is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the organization knows there's still much more to accomplish in the years to come. Countries such as Botswana, Mozambique, Lesotho and Namibia have contacted Focus on the Family Southern Africa to request support in the fight against AIDS. And other programs such as Heritage Builders form part of strategic plans for the near future. Contact Information Contact Information:
